Syria’s civil war became genocidal when Western powers began to help Syria’s military massacre and bomb civilians. ‘Watching over Syria (2016-2023)’ is something that came spiritually through my heartbreak felt when the individual that made 2016 different as well as uplifting with the dream and hope of love, did not accept my love and left. Everyone goes through loss in life, and I was no different, but the bloodshed I felt did not so much overwhelm but match what was being felt internally and bodily by vicarious means and experiences, when heavy grief stopped me via bodily sluggishness.

what is there to be had in our bloodshed,
that you kill us in so many of our houses?

Omran D.

open wound
slumped & polite
night
exhausted
what did I do wrong

boy
held his own hands
he looked at his hand
he
put them down
bloody
leaking hand
red smear
the chair
should I say something

oh no
put them
down
rub them off
put them down
put
them
down

me?
ouch. painful. dusty
stolen flop stop
no resistance
i’m sorry

boy
held his own hands
dungeon
slanted swollen hide it gone
bowl head cowered
crown heart breaking
shame on me

boy
held his own hands
